Ever have one of those moments where God speaks so clearly that your only choice is to obey? I love those moments. God moments, epiphanies, revelations, light bulbs…whatever you want to call them, they are pretty amazing.

I had one of those moments recently, which led me right here. A month ago, I wrote in my journal:

“The last couple of weeks I have had an inkling that God might be nudging me to start blogging or something.”

I know, profound, right?

I am an editor. That is my job and I’m good at it. But I am not a writer. Aside from a couple of poems when I was a kid, I don’t write. I respect good writers. I think it’s an awesome skill. My point is, I did not have a desire to start a blog. Cue my confusion at these little whispers from God that I was hearing. But He doesn’t necessarily call us to do what we want, does He? So, I prayed and asked for clarification.

About a week later, Pastor Jon approached me. It went something like this:

“Emerson, I want to talk to you about something. Would you be interested in writing for our church blog?”

There it was. The light bulb turned on. And here I am.

What is God trying to tell you? Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you?

Sunday, Moriah continued the “Nuts and Bolts” sermon series with “Partnering with the Holy Spirit.” Some suggestions he offered for doing this include the following:

  • Pray “Come, Holy Spirit.” Invite Him along.

  • Keep in step with the Holy Spirit. Follow His lead.

  • We all have unique spiritual gifts. Find yours (see 1 Cor. 12:4–11).
(By the way, the Vineyard 201 class can help with that. You can sign up by contacting office@vineyardbr.org)

We don’t have to have this amazing morning quiet time to invite the Holy Spirit along. (But if you do, that’s great!) I do it when I’m brushing my teeth, feeding the baby at 4am, making my coffee…or, in the quiet stillness as I’m just waking up. It doesn’t matter how we do it. But, in my experience, when I do pray, “Holy Spirit, be with me today. Guide my steps. Will you help me with [insert personal struggle here],” He is, He does, and He will.

Jesus said, “The Spirit of truth…will guide you into all the truth…and He will tell you what is yet to come.” John 16:13

The Helper, the Holy Spirit…will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything that I have ever told you.” John 14:26

How awesome is it that we have a Helper right here with us, leading us, reminding us of the truth, speaking to us?! I’m so grateful for this gift. And I’m grateful that I was prepared to say “yes” to Jon’s question by simply following where the Holy Spirit had been leading me.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite verses…

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5
